The Terpsichord Quartet is also noted for its flexible approach to instrument selection—using both modern and period instruments to suit the era of the works—but for this Beethoven recording, they’ve opted for period instruments crafted in mid-19th-century Paris! While the use of period instruments has become more widespread in recent years, this practice is still in its early stages in the chamber music genre compared to Beethoven’s symphonies, making this an album you definitely won’t want to miss. The soft timbre unique to gut strings eliminates the muddiness and excessive heaviness often associated with a strong attack, resulting in harmonies that are refreshingly clean throughout. The volume balance among the instruments is superb, and the elegant performance—born from an exquisite balance between lightness and depth—is a hallmark of the Terpsichord Quartet. In String Quartet No. 6—the final piece of the six-movement Op. 18, a representative work from his middle period—they deliver a refreshing and vibrant performance, while in No. 15, a major work from his later years, they present a rich performance that maintains a solid sense of stability even within its upbeat tempo!
