A Must-Hear for Baroque Vocal Music Fans! The World’s First Recording of the Masterpiece “The Great Flood,” Depicting Noah’s Flood! This new recording is a must-listen for fans of Baroque vocal music. Michelangelo Farvetti (1642–1692) was a composer born in Palermo, Sicily. In 1682, he was appointed music director at the cathedral in Messina, a port city on the island’s eastern coast, and *The Great Flood* premiered there that same year. “The Great Flood” refers, of course, to the flood famous from the Old Testament story of Noah’s Ark; this work is a type of oratorio based on a religious theme. However, the music—strongly imbued with the spirit of southern Italy—is free of any stuffy, sacral air and possesses a bright, crystalline beauty. Furthermore, Falvetti predates the elder Scarlatti by two generations and still bears strong traces of the styles of Monteverdi and Cavalli. The libretto consists of four parts: Part 1, “In Heaven”; Part 2, “On Earth”; Part 3, “The Flood”; and Part 4 “On Noah’s Ark.” Anyone familiar with the story of Noah’s Ark will be able to follow the narrative. Aralcon, whose recording of Handel’s *Judas Maccabaeus* (AMY024) was very well received, once again delivers a splendid performance brimming with Latin flavor. Taking into account that traces of Islamic culture still lingered in Sicily at the time, Aralcon masterfully incorporates Arabic percussion instruments to tremendous effect.
