Etsuko Hirose’s All-Out Interpretation of Vladigerov Etsuko Hirose, whose every album release has been met with rave reviews, has released her latest album—a collection of works by Vladigerov. As an artist whose recent releases have been garnering significant attention, it is certainly a delight to be able to hear these works performed by Etsuko Hirose. Pancho Vladigerov (1899–1978) was one of Bulgaria’s leading composers, who masterfully transformed Bulgarian folk music into art music using Bartók-inspired techniques. He studied piano in Berlin under Leonid Kreutzer—a name well-known in Japan—and, given that his students included the renowned pianist Alexis Weissenberg, his piano works are considered particularly outstanding. Here, three particularly captivating works—comprising a total of 15 pieces—have been selected from his extensive body of piano music. Three pieces from *Ten Impressions* and the *Bulgarian Suite* are also well-known in their orchestral versions, but here you can enjoy them in their original piano versions. One can sense that the piano version more eloquently conveys Vladigerov’s artistic vision. In addition to Bulgaria’s distinctive rhythms and unique Eastern sensibility, these works—composed by a master pianist—are all technically very challenging, yet they suit Etsuko Hirose’s pianism perfectly. Hirose has been drawn to Vladigerov’s works for several years, and this album—a labor of love—was realized at her strong request. It is also worth noting how the results of her careful study during the COVID-19 lockdown have culminated in performances brimming with conviction.
