Pérez is strongly associated with works from his native Spain—such as Albéniz, Granados, and Mompou—and his appeal lies in his crisp, bouncy rhythms, dry tone, and expansive musicality. Surprisingly, however, Perez’s favorite composer is Rachmaninoff, and he had long wanted to dedicate this milestone seventh album to the composer’s works. Here, he presents all six pieces from the early, heavy, and introspective *Moments Musicaux, Op. 16*, as well as five preludes, including “The Bells”—the first Rachmaninoff piece Pérez learned when he was 10 years old.
