Description:

"New World Music," Radiating Genushas' Youthful Energy This is the second release on the Mirare label by Lucas Genushas, who won second place at the 16th Chopin Competition. It is a fascinating album featuring a collection of piano pieces inspired by folk songs from Russia and Eastern Europe. The centerpiece is Deshatnikov’s “Songs of Bukovina,” which bears the subtitle “24 Preludes.” Deshatnikov (b. 1955) is a composer who has become well-known thanks to Kremer’s active promotion of his works. Interested in the folk songs and traditional music of his region, he is striving to establish a compositional style that harnesses their potential in the world of contemporary music, further advancing Bartók’s techniques. “Songs of Bukovina” consists of 24 short pieces based on folk songs from the region spanning Ukraine and Romania. It garnered significant attention when the American Ballet Theatre staged it as a ballet in 2017. Genushas not only premiered the work in Japan in Tokyo in October 2018 but has also performed it frequently around the world, making it something of a signature piece for him. This release marks the long-awaited complete recording of the work. While the piece is filled with Bartók-style energy, its freshness—which incorporates elements of jazz and popular music—gives it a stylish edge. The B-side features a range of works that allow you to fully appreciate Genushas’ youthful charm—from Bartók’s “15 Hungarian Peasant Songs,” composed 100 years ago using the same technique, to Tchaikovsky’s virtuosic piece based on the Slavic folk form known as the “dumka.” King International
