Caplet: Music That Moves the Listener’s Heart. His Late Masterpiece, “The Mirror of Jesus” André Caplet was a close friend of Debussy and premiered many of Debussy’s works, including “The Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian.” A composer in his own right, he suffered health problems during World War I and died prematurely at the age of 47; consequently, his body of work is not extensive. However, his beautiful style—rich in color and delicate nuances—embodies modern French music. “The Mirror of Jesus,” included here, was composed two years before his death and and consists of three parts—“The Mirror of Joy,” “The Mirror of Suffering,” and “The Mirror of Glory”—each comprising six pieces that begin with a prelude. The work is scored for a small ensemble, featuring a mezzo-soprano soloist, a choir, and a string quartet accompanied by a harp and double bass. Marie-Claude Chapuis’s pure voice, which seems to let in a ray of light, and the refined, high-quality ensemble playing of the Cine Nomine Quartet brilliantly capture Caplet’s witty and spirited musicality.
