Reaching New Heights as a Musician: Xu Xiaomei’s Mozart Pianist Xu Xiaomei, who lived through the turmoil of China’s Cultural Revolution, is now based in Paris, France. Her extraordinary life story and exceptional musical talent have garnered attention in Japan as well. This release is a collection of Mozart’s piano works. The album features a chronological selection of pieces composed from 1778, when Mozart moved to Paris, until his death in 1791. The first track is the “Variations on ‘Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star,’” which begins at a brisk tempo, followed by the innocent and pure “Sonata in C Major,” the unfinished “Fantasia,” the “Adagio in B Minor”—a rare piece for Mozart— “Variations” based on a work by cellist Jean-Pierre Dupois, Mozart’s final piano sonata, “Piano Sonata in D Major, K. 576,” and the “Andante” for mechanical organ, composed in the year of his death. Shu Xiaomei’s refined tone, resonance, dignified and intelligent interpretation, and profound musicality brilliantly capture the transparency of Mozart’s later years. She states that the keys to unlocking the mysteries of Mozart’s works are “freedom” and “profoundness.” “Mozart’s music is alive.
