Henry Purcell was a brilliant 17th-century English composer who passed away at the age of just 36. At the young age of 20, he was appointed organist at Westminster Abbey and subsequently gained renown as a court composer. Purcell composed numerous odes—hymns performed for special royal ceremonies—and also composed one ode each year to commemorate Queen Mary’s birthday. This album features a selection of his most representative works. The crystal-clear countertenor of Carlos Mena and the steady, gentle countertenor of Damien Guillon deliver beautiful, melancholic performances. The album also includes an ode composed by John Blow, Purcell’s teacher, to mourn Purcell’s untimely death. King International
