A rich program, unique to a French label, that unravels the charm of the art of the "violin"—a instrument beloved at the courts of late Baroque France. The album features works by Jean-Pierre Gignon (1702–1774), one of the violin virtuosos of the time who trained in Italy and was even called a rival to Leclair; composer Julien Amable Mathieu (1734–1811); and and the “Trio Sonata” by violinist Antoine Daubigny (1713–1797), who also served as director of the Concert Spirituel. This French period ensemble brings to life the violin artistry of that era—which likely captivated the daughters of King Louis XV and was performed at court—for modern audiences. Tokyo M-Plus
