Description:

Diapason's selection of the definitive disc series, Vol. 153! Kilebert & Berliner Philharmoniker's "The Magic Bullet"! Diapason, a French magazine specializing in world-class classical music, selects the best performances of the greatest works in the history of music and reissues them with new mastering in the series "Les expansables de Diapason - The Definitive Editions selected by Diapason". Volume 153 of the series features "The Magic Bullet Archer," a masterpiece by German Romantic composer Weber. Based on a German folk tale, this opera depicting a spiritual battle with the devil and the rescue of souls is a monumental work that established German Romantic opera, and is said to have greatly influenced later German operatic works, especially those by Wagner. Diapason selected this 1958 recording by Josef Kilebert, a German master musician born in the same year as Karajan who served as music director of major opera houses in Berlin and Bavaria, and the prestigious Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra. The orchestra plays with a hard sound that is typical of Germany, and the refined singing of Elisabeth Grünmer, a soprano whose talent was discovered by Karajan, and Rudolf Schock, a tenor singer who performed with Furtwängler, Sell, Böhm, and others and whose repertoire included operettas and popular songs, and who was extremely popular in Germany. The disc features the refined singing of the famous tenor Rudolf Schock, who was extremely popular in Germany and sang with Furtwängler, Sell, and Böhm, as well as a wide range of operas and popular songs.
