This series showcases German Romantic music, Johannes Brahms’ “Piano Works” and “Piano Concertos”—a 11-disc set! Gaëtan Noro, head of disc reviews at Diapason magazine, was responsible for selecting the performances included in this 18th installment of the series, “Brahms.” His meticulous curation is evident once again: for the three piano sonatas on “CD 1,” he selected performances by Schebec, Richter, and Edwin Fischer, while “CD 2” includes Anda’s recording of the Third Sonata. “Piano Concerto No. 1” features two recordings—Arrau’s 1964 version and Rudolf Serkin’s 1952 version—while “Piano Concerto No. 2” includes two recordings each: Arrau’s 1963 version and Backhaus’s 1939 version. and one of the highlights of this comprehensive Brahms box set is the opportunity to compare these legendary performances from years past. The remastering was once again handled by Isabelle Davy of Les Studios de Circe, the French mastering studio well-known for its work with the Diapason label, so the improved sound quality is definitely worth noting!
