The 70th Vivaldi Edition! Serenata with three characters full of beautiful ariasThe 18th-century vocal genre of "serenata" was often performed at festivals, birthdays, political events, marriages, and other celebratory occasions, often based on mythological themes. They were performed in the open air (very rarely with a simple stage) by torchlight, in two parts, with refreshments for the audience in between. Vivaldi is said to have composed a total of eight serenatas, of which only three manuscript scores are known to exist. Of these, RV 690 is believed to have been commissioned by Mr. Tourail, a French nobleman, to Vivaldi to celebrate his own marriage to a commoner woman. The story of this serenata is that Eurilla, a fairy, approaches Arsindo, a shepherd, but Arsindo rejects her because he thinks she is not serious due to the difference in their status as a fairy and a shepherd. However, when Arsindo realizes Eurilla's feelings for him and opens his heart to her, Eurilla rejects him. The arias are beautiful, and some of them are also used in "Teuzzone" and "Tito Manlio".
