Description:

Mount Athos, a peninsula in northeastern Greece, has been the center of Eastern Orthodox monasteries for more than a thousand years. This compilation of original field recordings of the liturgical music of the holy mountain from the 1960s to the present day includes new compositions inspired by the liturgical music of the mountain by various contemporary artists. It also includes new compositions inspired by the music by various contemporary artists. The 20 monasteries on Mount Athos are home to some 2,000 monks dedicated to prayer and worship, and their songs have echoed across the Aegean Sea for centuries. The songs, based on the chants used in the Orthodox rite of consecration = Byzantine chant, are an integral part of monastic life and are characterized by complex yet serene melodies, using scales for prayer and meditation. The first half of this album features songs by Holy Tongue (UK), Jay Glass Dubs (GR), Prins Emanuel & Inre Kresten Grupp (SWE), Jimi Tenor (FI), Gilb'r (FR), and Daniel Paleodimos (GR), Esma & Murat Ertel (TUR), Organza Ray (GR/US), and other contemporary artists sublimate the mystical essence of the chant into electronic music and express a new interpretation. Listening to the live chant recordings included in the latter half of the album, a different perspective on the appeal of liturgical music emerges. We are fortunate to be able to actually have a completely new type of musical project that is different from mere field recordings or compilations.
