Description:
I can’t believe this recording still exists! A commemorative album that offers fans a glimpse into Schelhen’s interpretations of Bruckner and *Don Giovanni*—sure to delight fans—is now available 2011 marks the 120th anniversary of Hermann Scherchen’s birth. To commemorate this, the Tahra label—headed by his beloved daughter—is offering a generous collection of rare recordings. Not only are most of these being released for the first time, but the collection is packed with rare recordings that are unique to Scherchen, making it truly stunning. Since many of these are broadcast recordings, some include announcements before the pieces begin, but the sound quality is excellent. The oldest recording is a Schubert concerto he conducted with the Belomünster Radio Orchestra in Switzerland in 1945, the year World War II ended, while the most recent is a Bruckner performance he conducted with the Toronto Symphony Orchestra in 1965. Scherchen’s Bruckner is a surprise—it’s just the third movement of Symphony No. 2, and even that was cut due to broadcast time constraints—but it offers a fascinating glimpse into his interpretation of Bruckner. Additionally, a recording of Mozart’s *Don Giovanni* has been preserved, though it lasts a mere seven minutes. Performed in German at a brisk tempo, it’s filled with a strangely intense energy. Furthermore, the cantata “Moments of Glory”—a work rarely performed even among Beethoven’s compositions—is a real gem. It runs for about 30 minutes and features a stellar lineup of soloists, including Fischer-Dieskau. Schelhen’s conducting is intense and utterly compelling, offering a fresh appreciation of the work.
