Warm Musical Messages from Around the World: A Composer and Pianist Sends Greetings to His Hometown Hyperion is releasing the album *Steven Hough’s Piano Postcards* by Steven Hough. It portrays the world from the perspective of a globetrotting pianist sending musical messages from his travels. Stephen has selected songs and melodies beloved around the world—from Japan, Taiwan, Mexico, and Spain—and reimagined them for the piano with witty arrangements. The skillful new arrangements heard here are a tribute to the countries he has come to love during his many years of touring, and they serve as small musical gifts sent to delight our ears. Steven writes: “The word ‘postcard’ evokes many things for me. Of course, travel, greetings sent across the sea, and the thought, ‘I wish you were here too.’ But it is also like a letter written from home to someone, where those few words carry more meaning than what is spoken.” From Asian music, the album features arrangements of “Spring Breeze Prelude” by Taiwanese composer Deng Yu-xian—a piece widely loved throughout Taiwan and China—and the Japanese children’s song “Akatonbo.” Folk and popular songs such as “Sherry Lind” and “Nature Boy” are featured, and the album naturally concludes with works by MacDowell, Schumann, and Sinding. Interspersed throughout this musical journey are dazzling new arrangements from film scores, including pieces he arranged for Lang Lang’s album *The Disney Book*. Piano arrangements of songs from *Frozen*, *Coco*, and *Mary Poppins* are also included for the first time. “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious” from the *Mary Poppins* suite was performed as an encore at the 2024 BBC Proms “Last Night” and was a huge success. This album, *Piano Postcards*, reflects the tradition of the composer-pianist—a musician who performs, arranges, and curates a repertoire with a free and distinctive sensibility.
