Description:
A Korean-American pianist pays tribute to his mentor with Bach’s masterpiece—the culmination of his musical journey Korean-American pianist Min-su Song makes his Hyperion debut with *J.S. Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book 1*. This two-CD set serves as a personal tribute from Son to his mentor, the legendary American pianist Russell Sherman. Sherman was a musician who regarded this work as one of the most sublime expressions of the human spirit. Following his mentor’s passing, Mrs. Sherman entrusted Min-seong with Sherman’s annotated score. This recording was realized based on that score and Min-seong’s study of Sherman’s approach to sound. Furthermore, this album represents the culmination of Mins’ musical journey—a journey that began in 2008 when a wrist injury forced him to take a hiatus from his career. From there, he rebuilt his technique from the ground up, completely transforming his physical relationship with the piano and gaining deeper musical insights that have influenced all his subsequent performances. Through this long process of self-renewal, he ultimately arrived at Bach. “We live in an increasingly hectic and restless world. Bach’s music urges us to slow down, pause, listen more attentively, and reconnect with something deeper. It reminds us of introspection, humanity, and balance” (Son Min-seung). Son Min-seong, winner of the 2006 Horens International Piano Competition, performs throughout Europe, North America, and Asia, and is highly acclaimed for his meticulous interpretations of Bach and Beethoven in particular. His recording of Bach’s *Goldberg Variations* was selected by *The New York Times* as one of the “Best Classical Recordings of 2011,” and his performance of all 32 of Beethoven’s piano sonatas has solidified his reputation as a performer of exceptional depth and musical integrity. In addition to his career as a performer, Son is widely respected as one of the leading piano teachers of our time. He has taught at the New England Conservatory, Michigan State University, and the Korea National University of Arts, where he has mentored many outstanding pianists, including Im Yun-chang. He also serves as a judge for major international competitions. Universal Music/IMS
