Attention music fans and choral enthusiasts in the Baltic States! A collection of choral works by the young Latvian composer Jančevskis! Hyperion, the label that has recorded outstanding choral works from the three Baltic countries—including those by Ēriks Esenvalds (CDA67796, CDA68083), Vytautas Miškinis (CDA67818), and “Baltic Exchange” (CDA67747)—the Hyperion label, which has long been recording outstanding choral works from the three Baltic states, is releasing a new installment in its “Baltic Choral Music” series featuring the works of young Latvian composer Jekabs Jancevskis (b. 1992). Jancevskis studied piano at the Jāzeps Medins Riga 1st Music School and earned a diploma in choral conducting from the Riga Cathedral Choir School. He studied composition with Serga Mense at the Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music and is currently pursuing his master’s degree in Jānis Petraškevičs’s class. Jancevskis’s music is described as a “beautiful enigma,” imbued with heartfelt messages that bypass intellectual filters. The program features eight pieces, including “Ebb Tide,” set to a Polish poem; “Coldness,” sung with Latvian lyrics; a religious work in Latin; and “At That Moment,” taken from *Romeo and Juliet* (Act 3, Scene 2). Jurgis Cabulis (b. 1992), a classmate of Jančevskis at the Riga Cathedral Choir School who sang with him in the mixed choir until 2012, conducts the Riga Cathedral Choir School’s mixed choir.
