The second installment in the new series by Ilan Volkov and the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra (BBCSSO)—a collection of Stravinsky’s ballet music—focuses on the themes of “Stravinsky” and “Tchaikovsky.” “The Fairy’s Kiss” was composed at the request of the renowned Russian ballerina Ida Rubinstein. This ballet is not entirely Stravinsky’s original work; rather, it was composed based on Tchaikovsky’s songs and piano pieces, and is known as a unique work in which the styles of both composers shine through. In contrast, “Scenes from a Ballet” is an original work composed in Hollywood in 1944. It is characterized by its short playing time of approximately 16 minutes and its neoclassical style.
