Description:
Takács Quartet / Schubert: “Death and the Maiden” The Takács Quartet’s highly anticipated first release on Hyperion! The Takács Quartet was formed in 1975 by students at the Liszt Academy of Music in Hungary. Despite several changes in membership over the years, they have long established themselves as one of the world’s finest string quartets. Their skill and reputation are well known, as evidenced by their receipt of the Knight’s Cross from Hungary. This world-renowned, prestigious string quartet has now left Decca—with whom they had an exclusive contract for 17 years starting in 1988—and moved to Hyperion in search of greater freedom in their activities and repertoire! Their highly anticipated first release since the move features Schubert’s late string quartets. Since August 2005, the viola position has been taken over by Geraldine Walther, principal violist of the San Francisco Symphony, replacing Roger Tapping—a key development that allows listeners to fully appreciate the sound of the revitalized Takács Quartet. Incidentally, “Death and the Maiden” was performed during their Japan tour this past June and received rave reviews. With future releases of works by Brahms, Janáček, and Schumann scheduled at a rate of one album per year, there is no doubt that they will add a dazzling, jewel-like brilliance to Hyperion’s catalog. Keep a close eye on the Takács String Quartet’s future activities.
