Osborne/Liszt: *Poetic and Religious Melodies* (2CD) Steven Osborne caused a sensation in the UK with his 2002 release of Messiaen’s *20 Regards on the Infant Jesus* (CDA67351 / Japanese edition MCDA67351), which was hailed by the British magazine *Gramophone* as “one of the greatest recordings in Hyperion’s history” and selected by *BBC Music Magazine* as one of the “Best of 2002 ," and was also named one of the Daily Telegraph’s “Best of the Year,” sparking a sensation—almost a boom—in the UK. In Japan as well, his name steadily gained recognition among piano enthusiasts following his guest appearance at the NHK Symphony Orchestra’s subscription concert that same year and reviews by critics such as Hidekazu Yoshida. His 2003 recording of Alkan’s complete *Ébauches* (CDA67377 / Japanese edition MCDA67377) was also highly acclaimed. Osborne’s latest release kicks off 2004. As his first recording of Liszt’s works, it is attracting exceptional attention. The complete recording of the monumental *Poetic and Religious Melodies* was also well-received upon its release, thanks to Leslie Howard’s earlier recording (CDA66421 / recorded in 1989) garnered acclaim upon its release; however, even among independent labels worldwide, there are very few that have recorded the complete *Poetic and Religious Melodies* twice. The fact that this two-disc set is priced at the cost of a single disc is a testament to Hyperion’s high expectations.
