Tatiana Nikolaeva was one of the key figures who supported the many talented pianists who left the Soviet Union in the 20th century; she won first prize at the 1950 International Bach Piano Competition in Leipzig. Her recordings of Bach’s works were highly praised by critics. While other performers used so-called “period” instruments, Nikolaeva preferred to play Bach on a modern Steinway. This magnificent recording of the *Goldberg Variations*—her fifth recording of the work and one of two Bach recordings she made for Hyperion in 1992, just one year before her death—was a tremendous success.
