Choir of The King's Consort & The King's Consort
Description:
A landmark project featuring recordings of major Baroque works discovered 100 years ago Hyperion is releasing a complete collection of the sacred music of Vivaldi, a leading composer of the Italian Baroque, performed by British conductor Robert King and the King’s Consort. This is an 11-CD box set. Recorded between 1994 and 2003, these recordings were highly acclaimed at the time and contain countless gems. Regarding Vivaldi’s sacred music, a wooden chest containing approximately 300 autograph scores was discovered in 1926 at a monastery near Turin, Italy; since at least 50 of these were sacred works, this music was virtually unknown until just 100 years ago. This set highlights the wonderful diversity of Vivaldi’s styles and instrumental arrangements. While many of his early and late works are believed to have been written for the female musicians of the Pietà, his middle period (from the mid-1720s to the early 1730s) features particularly brilliant works, exemplified by the famous “Dixit Dominus” (RV 594). The performances feature the early music ensemble The King’s Consort, founded in 1980, and the King’s Consort Choir, as well as Joyce DiDonato, Charles Daniels, Natalie Stutzmann, Carolyn Sampson, Robin Blaze, James Bowman, Susan Gritton, Sarah Connolly, and Neil Davies—a stellar lineup of soloists representing the Baroque music world of today and recent years. Includes a booklet with liner notes by Michael Tolbott (in English, French, and German) and lyrics (in the original Latin with English translations). “This definitive collection of Vivaldi’s works is brimming with energy and rich in emotion, movement, and color.” — *Fanfare* “One of the most important undertakings in the world of Baroque music, rediscovering the ‘Red-Haired Priest’ as a church music composer of keen intellect and burning conviction.” — *Classic FM Magazine* “One of the landmark achievements in recording history—a rarity indeed.” —*American Record Guide* “One of [King’s] most important and satisfying recording projects to date.” —*Gramophone* Universal Music/IMS
