As with “Alice,” his belief in the revival of tonality in serious concert works remains strong here; drawing extensively on 19th-century musical language, he unfolds music that is just as energetic and dynamic as his orchestral works. In particular, *The Sacrifice* for string quintet and piano captivates the listener with a romanticism and melodic beauty so striking that one might mistake it for a work by Tchaikovsky or Mendelssohn. The *Felix Variations*, written for the composer’s nephew, trombonist Felix Del Tredici, is a virtuosic solo piece based on the melody of the 24th of Paganini’s famous 24 Caprices.
