Jean-Claude Margot and the Royal Stables and Royal Orchestra previously recorded Mozart’s “Requiem” in 1986 using the “Jusmayer edition.” The version now being released by K617 was discovered in the archives of Rio de Janeiro Cathedral. It was composed in Rio de Janeiro in 1819 by Sigismund von Neumayer, with the “Libera Me” added as the final section. The “Libera Me,” which follows “Lux Aeterna,” is a dramatic piece that is truly moving! Margot seems to have performed the standard sections of the Requiem with restraint—as if to highlight this “Libera Me”—resulting in a vivid, vibrant performance that delivers music of the highest caliber. Based on the Rio manuscript, the key to a new interpretation of Mozart’s Requiem is revealed here. Margot is a musician with a deep understanding of Mozart’s works in general—as evidenced by her recordings of Mozart’s operas—making this a highly anticipated release.
