French pianist François-Frédéric Guy, whose musical depth has been increasing year by year, has been actively recording Beethoven's piano sonatas and piano concertos in recent years. Guy has been actively recording Beethoven's piano sonatas and piano concertos in recent years, and his musicality, expressive power, and overwhelming concentration have deepened over the years. Brahms is one of his favorite composers, and Guy recorded a Brahms sonata about 20 years ago, so we can look forward to hearing Brahms at his peak of maturity. Brahms wrote only three piano sonatas in his youth. Piano Sonata No. 2 is a profound work that is hard to believe that he composed it at the age of 19. While the first sonata (the numbering is back and forth due to publication) was a work of great confidence for him, Schumann introduced the excellence of this work in the "New Music Times" and it was well received among music fans of the time. The third sonata, which can be called the culmination of Brahms's piano sonatas, is a large-scale sonata in five movements, a masterpiece that was revised many times by Brahms himself, and in which he put a great deal of passion. Guy's performance is powerful and passionate, full of dynamism and deep, rich resonance.The heroic No. 3 is full of Brahmsian charm and Guy is full of enthusiasm, but the dark, passionate, romantic tone of No. 2 is wonderfully fulfilling in Guy's tense and tight performance. The recording was made at the Arsenal in Metz, a hall that boasts one of the best acoustics in Europe. The piano is a Yamaha CFX concert grand, the top of the line.
