In the mid-19th century, the French music scene was dominated by opera and chamber music by German composers, leaving little opportunity for chamber music by French composers—and few of their works were even performed. Against this backdrop, Godard’s Violin Sonata No. 1—written when he was just 17 years old—became a pioneering work that preceded those of Fauré, Saint-Saëns, and Franck. The Violin Sonatas Nos. 1–4 included here were all composed by Godard during his youth, between the ages of 17 and 23. While their classical style and musical ideas reminiscent of Beethoven and Brahms are far removed from what is generally associated with the term “French music,” there is no doubt that these works contributed to laying the foundation for French chamber music and were indispensable to its subsequent development. Written approximately 30 years before the appearance of Debussy’s *Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun*—a turning point in music history—these four sonatas are brimming with the passion and drive of a young composer seeking to bring about new changes in France at a time when German music dominated the scene. In this era of French music—one that rarely receives much attention in music history—composers were indeed searching for music that would lead into the next generation.
