A blend of the excitement of organ concertos and the sophisticated musicality of falsetto Three masterful cantatas composed in quick succession in 1726 Featuring the “Bach Organ” at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig! From the summer through the fall of 1726, Bach composed three cantatas for alto solo. It is believed that Bach had an exceptionally talented alto singer working with him at the time, but the identity of that person remains unknown. According to Benno Schachtner, the singer was most likely a young man who sang in falsetto, corresponding to what we would today call a “countertenor.” In any case, this collection of masterpieces makes it easy to imagine that the singer’s exceptional skill and musicality must have inspired Bach’s compositional drive. Furthermore, these three works feature an innovative element known as the “obligato organ.” While the organ typically served only as the basso continuo in cantatas, here it is elevated to the status of a solo instrument, holding its own on equal terms at times with the orchestra and at other times with the soloist. Given that BWV 35 includes music heard in BWV 1059 and BWV 169 includes music heard in BWV 1053—both of which are considered organ concertos—the organ’s prominent role is truly remarkable. The recording was made at St. Thomas Church in Leipzig, where Bach was actually active. Of particular note is the use of the “Bach Organ,” installed in the church in 2000, as the solo instrument.
