Description:

What it means to be human, what it means to live— Fundamental questions unfolding on a cosmic scale. The RPO, led by Vasily Petrenko, portrays this on an unprecedented scale! A highly anticipated new release of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3, one of his most monumental works. This is a live recording of a concert performed by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Vasily Petrenko, at the Royal Albert Hall in April 2023. Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 embraces the entire world, where nature, humanity, and the spiritual realm intersect on a cosmic scale. Vasily Petrenko vividly brings to life the full richness hidden within this monumental work, which stands among the pinnacles of symphonic composition. Featuring a large ensemble of nearly 90 musicians (including a band and bells), as well as soloists, a choir, and a children’s choir, this is a work of grand scale. Performed in the vast space of the Royal Albert Hall, this is a moving performance unlike any other. “Listen to the young genius’s attempt to portray life, the universe, and everything as a single philosophy. Or simply savor the most beautiful, vivid, and awe-inspiring sounds ever produced by an orchestra. What a rich imagination! Even the longest symphony in the concert repertoire seems too small to contain all the inspiration that filled Mahler. Mahler created a world of his own. And for these all-too-brief 100 minutes, we are granted the privilege—and the inexhaustible joy—of living in that world.” (Words of Vasily Petrenko) A Russian-British conductor born in 1976 in what was then Leningrad (now St. Petersburg). He is currently Music Director of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), a position he assumed in 2021. He gained international attention in 2002 after winning first prize at the Cadaqués International Conducting Competition. From 2006 to 2021, he served as Principal Conductor (later Conductor Laureate) of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, earning high praise for significantly advancing the orchestra. He has held key positions including Principal Conductor of the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra (2013–2020) and Principal Conductor of the EU Youth Orchestra (2015–2024). He has performed frequently with some of the world’s leading orchestras, including those in Europe, North America, and Japan. His repertoire is extensive, and he is particularly known for his interpretations of Mahler and Russian music (Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff). He is also active in the opera world. Born in Poland. She trained at the Stanisław Moniuszko Academy of Music in Gdańsk, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London, and the National Opera Studio, and was a member of the Jette Parker Young Artists Programme at the Royal Opera House. She continues to perform at world-class opera houses, including the Royal Opera House (Covent Garden) and the Glyndebourne Festival. HARMONIAMUNDI
