Daughters of the Rhine: A program of female choral works by musicians enchanted by the Rhine, curated by Pichon as a narrative Raphaël Pichon, born in 1984, is currently the most talked-about figure in the French early music scene. This album features his Ensemble Pygmalion, joined primarily by mezzo-soprano Bernarda Fink and harpist Emmanuel Saisson, presenting a program centered on female choral works by composers enchanted by the Rhine: Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, and Wagner. The Rhine River, which flows through Switzerland, Germany, France, and the Netherlands, is steeped in legends and myths of beautiful maidens who seduce sailors and cause their ships to wreck. It has been the setting for numerous historical events and has captivated many writers, painters, and artists, including Hugo, Nerval, Heine, Einhundert, and Turner. In Wagner's "Das Rheingold," three water maidens appear to guard the gold hidden at the bottom of the Rhine. Pichon and Pygmalion's program follows the flow of the river with these "daughters," dividing the songs into several categories to uncover the secrets of the fatherly Rhine.Harmonia Mundi presents a collection of rare female choral works, interpreted in Pison's unique style.
