Description:
Bach's Lost Music: A Reconstructed Recording Emerges! "Funeral Music for Prince Leopold" Incorporating Works Like the St. Matthew Passion Pichon & Ensemble Pygmalion A reconstructed recording of the long-lost "Funeral Music for Prince Leopold" emerges! This project is led by Raphaël Pichon. He is a conductor renowned for both research and performance, who brilliantly recreated the origins of the enigmatic 'Mass in B minor' – a work shrouded in mystery due to its numerous revisions – in his Alpha label release of the 'Missa brevis in B minor'. His relentless exploration and research have yielded yet another magnificent achievement. J.S. Bach served as Kapellmeister at the court of Prince Leopold of Anhalt-Köthen [1694-1728] from 1717 to 1723. The prince was a music-loving and knowledgeable patron who maintained an excellent court orchestra and was a great supporter of Bach.During this period, Bach composed many outstanding instrumental works, including the Brandenburg Concertos, the Sonatas and Partitas for Solo Violin, the Inventions, and Book 1 of The Well-Tempered Clavier, enjoying a period of great creative fulfillment (though most of these were fair copies, and it is not entirely clear whether the works themselves were actually composed during this time). This Funeral Music for Prince Leopold was performed on March 24, 1729, for the prince who had died in 1728. Although the musical score is lost, the text for this work by Picander, who also wrote the text for the St. Matthew Passion, survives. Since this text is structured to fit directly onto existing aria melodies from works like the St. Matthew Passion (first edition, 1727), it can be considered that this funeral music was composed using Bach's own parody technique. For example, the famous alto aria "Erbarme dich" ("Have mercy on me") from the St. Matthew Passion is replaced in this funeral music with the text "Erhalte mich" ("Preserve me"), making it completely interchangeable. In this way, by fitting the text to existing musical compositions, this restoration and recording became a reality. The track listing in the booklet includes a comparison chart (in English) with the original works, such as the St. Matthew Passion, "O Princess, a Light Arises" BWV 198, and the Mass in B minor. The performers are equally impressive: the brilliant Ensemble Pygmalion, alongside a stellar vocal cast including France's new soprano diva, Duvivier, and Damien Guillon, deliver a brilliantly polished and tightly focused performance.
