A bold trio sonata that showcases Biber’s signature unconventional tunings A masterpiece brimming with rich resonance and brilliant virtuosity—a truly delightful work! In 1696, Heinrich Ignaz Franz Biber, Kapellmeister at the Salzburg court, inscribed the words “Harmonia artificiosa-ariosa” (meaning “artistic and song-like harmony”) in ornate Latin on the title page of his published collection of seven chamber suites (partitas) for two string instruments and basso continuo. These trio sonatas possess a unique character; the two upper voices do not merely adhere to the imitative techniques common in Italy at the time, but are allowed to develop freely and expressively. In other words, by combining the violin, viola, and viola d’amore in various ways, and further altering the tension and pitch of the strings through scordatura (alternate tuning), he produces rich harmonies and skillful passages while employing a sound that is at times sharp and at other times soft. This can truly be called a masterpiece in which Biber’s unique technical brilliance is fully displayed. Harmonie Universelle is dedicated to recording the works of Biber and has previously released “Fidicinium Sacro-Profanum: Sacred and Secular String Works” (ACC-24357) and “Sonatae Tam Aris Quam Aulis Servientes: Sonatas for the Altar and the Court” (ACC-24386).
