Description:

Himeno's rhythmic sense and the orchestra's coloristic brilliance explode! The popular Himeno & Toronto Symphony series returns with Bartók!! The third installment of the thriving Himenō & Toronto Symphony series arrives. Previous releases—Messiaen's Turangalîla Symphony (HMM-905356) and Stravinsky's Pulcinella (HMM-905384)—have showcased the orchestra's astonishingly rich tonal palette and remarkable rhythmic precision. This time, they tackle two musical pinnacles. This program truly showcases the skills of Himenō, who is also a percussionist. Bartók's Concerto for Orchestra dazzles with its brilliant orchestral palette. The Miraculous Mandarin is recorded in its complete version, its vivid, powerful rhythms and timbres shining brilliantly. Sandwiched between these two works is "the sediments" by Canadian composer Emily Cecilia LeBel. Commissioned by the orchestra, this piece is a captivating meditation on nature, its stratification, and the collective memory etched within. Bartók's overwhelming power is truly magnificent. LeBel's work also conjures vivid images of natural landscapes.I am struck by the richness of imagery in Himeno and Toronto's performance. Regarding Rubel's work (in her own words): "My compositional practice is deeply connected to literature and the natural world. For 'the sediments,' I drew inspiration from the writings of environmental activist Rachel Carson and her insights into the enduring presence of the Earth's elements. This work explores the interrelationship of nature's elements and their enduring presence throughout history. During the compositional process, I contemplated the weight of sediment and the layers of our collective history—how what we are and what we were are always with us. The music evokes this image through sonic textures reminiscent of gravel, rocks, and heavy rain. Commissioned by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra and Himeno. It was premiered in April 2022 by the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the late Sir Andrew Davis. HARMONIA MUNDI
