A work of pure beauty by William Rawls A piece to be enjoyed in peace and quiet The Ensemble Prés de votre Oreille (meaning "by your ear"), led by Robin Faro, appears on the Harmonia mundi label. The ensemble has featured Elizabethan music in the past, but this time it is William Lawes (1602-1645) who is featured here. This time, however, we are featuring William Lawes (1602-1645), a brilliant successor to Byrd (c. 1543-1623) and Gibbons (1583-1625). Lowes was one of the last of a generation of composers to write music for viol consort, and his highly complex five- and six-voice counterpoint works demand a level of skill and musicality that sets them apart from the works of other similar composers. Many of the vocal works are also works of great purity and beauty, and the ensemble led by Faro performs them with the utmost purity. William Lawes served as a luthier and singer at the court of Charles I. In the 1630s (late 20s and 30s), Lawes wrote some of the finest chamber and vocal works of his time, and was recognized as one of the leading musicians of his day.He also wrote music for court festivities (track 19, "O my Clarissa"), indicating that he was heavily used. The title of the album, "Lighten mine eies (Lighten my eyes)," is taken from track 15, "How long will thou forget me, O Lord, for ever(? How long will thou forget me, O Lord, for ever?
