Even a Wagnerian is sure to be scaled by this. Lugansky's world of Wagner on the piano! Nikolai Lugansky is one of today's best pianists in terms of both technique and musicality. He is active in recording and has an extensive discography, and his latest release is a surprising Wagner. The latest disc, however, is not an original Wagner piano piece, but a piano rendition of a famous number from a musical opera. There are various piano arrangements of Wagner's works, but it is difficult to fit a complex score into 10 fingers and to maintain the sense of time that flows slowly in the original works, so Lugansky took on the challenge of expanding existing arrangements and creating his own versions. The highlight of the concert is his arrangement of four scenes from "Götterdämmerung," conceived more than 20 years ago and completed only a few days before the recording. It is not just a virtuoso effect, but a magnificent and very moving one, filled with philosophical depth about good and evil, wealth and love. Lugansky's matured and divine work is on display here. Lugansky was a great Wagnerian, especially after "Lohengrin," and said that it was his dream to make an album of his works.In fact, he never stops talking about Wagner, and even the CD booklet discusses his passionate love of Wagner. Liszt's "Isolde's Love Death," which Lugansky praises as "a true masterpiece of Wagner's piano arrangements," is performed at the end of the concert, and it is overwhelmingly convincing and amazing, exceptional among the many recordings of the same piece, thanks to his deep understanding of the original opera.
