Schubert by Pablo Elas-Cassado & the FBO with great rhythm and mobility! Pablo Elas-Cassado and the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra present their second collection of Schubert symphonies. The first volume (HMC902154) was a combination of the 3rd (1815) and 4th (1816), and this time the 5th (1816) and the Unfinished (1822) Symphony No. 5, written when he was 19 years old, is a cheerful and rhythmical work that does not show the darkness in Schubert's mind. The Fifth Symphony, written at the age of 19, is a cheerful, rhythmical work that does not reveal the darkness of Schubert's heart. The FBO responded to Elas-Cassado's natural rhythmic virtuosity with great agility, and the performance was detailed and full of vitality. Even though the work is unfinished, every single note Schubert wrote in the score has been painstakingly expressed. In particular, the beauty of the wind ensemble at the beginning of the second movement is superb. Moments of despair and anxiety, which are not present in No. 5, are played with truly dramatic effect. The contrast between the two works, the bright No. 5 and the unfinished one with glimpses of despair and anxiety, is extremely vivid. This is a masterful performance in which Elas-Casado's singing and rhythmic conducting and the FBO's mobility create a wonderful chemical reaction. King International
