≪Puccini: Symphonic Capriccio Himeno & Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra's 2022 recording of Puccini's "La bohème" is a remarkable collection of religious and orchestral (instrumental) works by the opera composer. Puccini (1858-1924), a descendant of five generations of church musicians, was active as a choir member from around age 10, and at the same time began his education in violin, piano, organ, and composition. And by the age of 14, he was performing as a church organist. Although often described as having begun to devote himself to opera after being exposed to Verdi's "Aida" in 1876, Puccini's early achievements in chant, chamber music, and orchestral music are the most important works of his career. It is important to remember that Puccini's early achievements were in chant, chamber music, and orchestral music, and that he continued to write works in these genres throughout his career, albeit not as often as he would have liked. The most important of his early works outside of opera are carefully selected and included here. The Scherzo is one movement from a string quartet written in 1881-83. The disc opens with the Gloria Mass, a large orchestra and chorus with two male voices (tenor and baritone) as soloists. It is a very glittering work and very weighty. Although it is not an opera, it is clear that the voices are wonderfully handled. And the orchestra supporting the voices is also expressive and full. You can feel that the Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra led by Gimeno is performing with the power of intimacy. ≪The "Symphonic Capriccio" is a piece for the final examination for graduation from the Milan Conservatory. From the very beginning, it is dramatic, as if it were the overture to a grand opera or the opening of a movie.In Italy, it is customary to offer flowers of "Chrysanthemums" to the deceased, and this "Chrysanthemums" (originally a string quartet work, but performed here with a string orchestra) is an elegy for the death of the King of Spain (reigned 1870-73, second son of King Vittorio Emanuele II of Italy).
