Passion Passion music by Gesualdo Carlo Gesualdo, unlike other composers of the time, was an incredibly wealthy aristocrat. Most musicians of the time were employed, and it was rather dubious to be a nobleman and a musician, but Jesualdo was proud, almost obsessive, in his musical accomplishments. And while in those days publishing musical works was done to improve one's status and conditions, to find new work, or simply for the money, Jesualdo did it purely to preserve his fine works for posterity. And in his later years, when he was convinced that he was running out of time, he converted a room in his castle into a printing house, where he produced and printed the ultimate collections of madrigals, Books V and VI, and the Responsorium on Holy Week. This was nothing less than his attempt to preserve for posterity what he was proud to call the masterpieces of his lifetime, even though he was in failing health. These are the best of Jesualdo's own musical selections from among his own works. The Responsorium can also be positioned as a religious madrigale.It was written for the liturgy (Passion reading) on Thursday, Friday and Saturday before Easter. During Holy Week, no bells were rung, but a loud sound was made by striking a wooden stick to announce the beginning and end of the service.
