Complete Collection. This is the third volume of Melnikov's collection of Prokofiev's sonatas, following the first and second collections (HMC 902202; domestic edition KKC-5694, HMM 902203; domestic edition KKC-6211), which were specially selected by Record Geijutsu magazine. This time, it is noteworthy that it contains the very starting point and arrival point of Prokofiev's "Op. 1," Sonata No. 1, and the revised version of Sonata No. 5, the last completed work. Prokofiev's piano sonatas were the specialty of Melnikov's teacher, Svyatoslav Richter, who was highly trusted by the composer, but for some reason he never performed these three sonatas, and of course there are no recordings of them. These three sonatas are, so to speak, the "sonatas that Richter never played. Melnikov knows best how Richter would have played them, and it is interesting to hear a glimpse of how he would have played them. The Piano Sonata No. 1 was written when he was a student at the age of 16, and the influence of Scriabin can be felt.The Fifth Symphony was originally composed in Paris in 1923 as "Op. 38" and was radical in content at the same time as the Second Symphony and the opera "Angel of Fire". The "fleeting phantoms" is a collection of small pieces that Richter also loved to play in several pieces.
