Paul Lewis plays Brahms' last works with a soft tone that is full of passionFamed pianist Paul Lewis presents a collection of works from Brahms' last years, full of softness and passion. Paul Lewis had been developing the "HBB Project," a program featuring piano works by Haydn, Brahms, and Beethoven. Beethoven has already completed a recording of all of his sonatas, and two Haydn sonata collections have been released [Collection 1/KKC-5917 and HMM-902371, Collection 2/KKC-6425 and HMM-902372], but here comes the Brahms. Following the Piano Concerto with his close friend Harding (which also includes the Ballade op. 10) [KKC-5622/HMC-902191], this second Brahms disc features works from Brahms' last years. This disc features works from the last years of Brahms's life, which are different from the magnificent sonatas that seem to have been transferred directly from the orchestra to the piano, but are instead a condensed version of his world.Even so, the finale of op. 119, which seems to be longing for something that can never be obtained, and other pieces that cannot be contained within the frame of "piano" reveal something of Brahms' strong feelings. Paul Lewis plays these works with a tone that seems to encapsulate all and everything of Brahms, and he plays these works in a rage while maintaining moderation.
