Boston Camerata’s Beautiful and Solemn Medieval Christmas Music The Boston Camerata was founded in 1954 as an organization dedicated to performing and researching the instruments in the collection of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. In the mid-1970s, the concert program “Medieval Christmas,” led by then-director Joel Cohen, was released on LP by Nonsuch and became a huge hit. Since then, medieval Christmas music has remained one of the Boston Camerata’s most important repertoire items. Here, the world woven together by the voices of three female singers (who also play instruments) and two instrumentalists—along with the hardy-gurdy, harp, vihuela, and bells—is both simple and solemn. Although the sources of the individual pieces vary, the program is primarily composed of music passed down in the Aquitaine region during the 11th and 12th centuries. This collection of Christmas music seems to convey even the very breath of the people of the Middle Ages. King International
