A Broad Perspective on the Genius Picasso Through the Lens of “Music” "Les musiques de Picasso": Picasso and Music A special release produced to coincide with the Picasso exhibition held at the Philharmonie de Paris from April to August 2020. Although Picasso did not listen to music every day, nor did he play any instruments himself, music served as a catalyst for his creativity. For Picasso, music served as both a subject (as seen in his series of images depicting musicians, dancers, instruments, and sheet music) and a metaphor (as evidenced by fragments of songs and musical allusions found in his writings and theatrical projects). He was also commissioned to design sets for stage productions, such as ballets, and socialized with countless musicians, composers, and singers of his time. This two-disc set features the Gypsy lullabies Picasso heard in his childhood, the music of Albéniz and others he encountered at the café “Quattro Gatti,” as well as works depicting the mandolin (such as Debussy’s “Mandoline”), works by “Les Six” with whom he was close in Paris, and the music from the ballets for which he designed the sets—allowing listeners to gain a comprehensive overview of Picasso’s art from the perspective of “music.” It is so compelling that one might even feel as though all paths lead to the astonishing genius that was Picasso; the content truly brings home how the most cutting-edge figures of the time and outstanding music were intimately intertwined with the man himself.
