Stunning Beauty! Vocal Works by Kapusberger A collection of vocal works by Kapusberger, who is renowned as a master of the theorbo, is now available. Kapsberger was born in Venice to German parents. He spent nearly his entire life in Italy. After marrying, he moved to Rome, where he made a name for himself as a master theorbo player, performing in the circles of the upper classes. In Rome, he was also known as “Il Tedesco” (Italian for “the German”). While he was a master of the theorbo, he also possessed a beautiful voice, and his first published score was a collection of madrigals (1608/09). Although these works are still rarely performed today, they are all pieces in which the music is beautifully fused with the poetic quality of the text. The members of L’Escadron Volant de la Reine perform them with great poetic sensitivity. The instrumental pieces recorded between the vocal works are also all exquisite. “L’Escadron Volant de la Reine” (The Queen’s Flying Squadron) refers to the ladies-in-waiting employed by Catherine de’ Medici. They played a role in softening tensions in relations with other European courts—through conversation and simply by their very presence. This ensemble, too, was formed in January 2012 under the leadership of Antoine Touché with the aim of pursuing musical activities without hierarchy, just as those ladies did.
