Tamesti, a violist, is not only active as one of the world’s top violists but is also widely known in Japan for co-directing “Viola Space” with Nobuko Imai. Yuto Suzuki, in addition to serving as principal conductor of Bach Collegium Japan, is active as an instrumentalist and composer, and serves as executive producer of the Chofu International Music Festival—a figure whose talent has captured the world’s attention. Tamesti and Yuto Suzuki have already performed together in Japan. As they are of a similar generation and share many commonalities—such as both producing music festivals—the two have developed a relationship that could be described as that of close allies. Their long-awaited Bach performance is sure to be a highlight! The great appeal of the viola da gamba sonatas lies in the delicate interplay of the three voices: the viola da gamba part and the right and left hands of the harpsichord. The collection features a series of captivating works, each showcasing strong virtuosic elements in both the harpsichord and the solo parts. In preparation for this recording, the duo delved deep into the music—exploring connections between the various movements of Bach’s cantatas and examining their texts—to thoroughly analyze every note. Tamesti’s beautiful tone—possessing a universal beauty that transcends the concept of the viola or string instruments—shines brilliantly here as well. Suzuki’s harpsichord playing is truly eloquent, making this arguably the finest interpretation of Bach one could hope for. The B-side features the third aria from Cantata BWV 5, composed in 1724 during Bach’s time in Leipzig. This tenor aria is accompanied by a beautiful, technically demanding, and flowing instrumental obbligato solo that seems to pour forth an overflowing abundance of divine grace. No specific instrument is specified for this solo. Since it is written in alto clef, it is often performed on instruments such as the viola, but in fact, the range is within the capabilities of a violin. Here, Suzuki performs the entire piece, including the vocal part, while Tamesti plays the obbligato part. It is a magnificent performance that truly feels like a salvation, thanks to the solo part that expresses God’s overflowing grace. King International
