Description:
The Trio Wanderer, formed in 1987, has matured considerably since their release of their highly acclaimed Tchaikovsky in 2013, and now they take on Rachmaninoff. Since Tchaikovsky, it has become customary for Russian composers to compose piano trios in memory of special people, and after Tchaikovsky's sudden death in October 1893, Rachmaninoff dedicated a lengthy and moving work to his spirit. The length, structure, and other aspects of the work are intentionally imitated, but Rachmaninoff is unique in that the piano plays a leading role and is extremely technical. The work is heavy with meaningful quotations and lamentations, overflowing with feelings for Tchaikovsky. The year before, Rachmaninoff had left a study-like movement, but in recent years, more and more performing groups have begun to take this one up, both for its scale and naïve sensibility. Of course, it is included here as well. It is also a pleasure to note that Grieg's only piano trio work, "Andante con moto" and Suk's "Dirge" are selected as filler pieces. Trio Wanderer's performance is dry, tense, and even terrific.Rachmaninoff's works are often recorded with great pianists, but Trio Wanderer pianist Vincent Cocq is also a great listener, showing his substantial virtuosity.
