Christophe Rousset’s Latest Solo Recording from 2018 Louis Couperin, performed on an original instrument by Johannes Ksché, built in 1652! Clear articulation, rich and vivid tone Christophe Rousset is a towering figure in the French early music scene, both as an opera conductor and as a keyboardist. His latest 2018 recording is a solo performance as a keyboardist: a collection of suites by Louis Couperin. Louis Couperin (c. 1626–1661), uncle to François, was a pivotal composer in the history of 17th-century keyboard music. Louis, who died far too young at the age of 35, made a name for himself as an “harmonist”; his rich harmonies, dissonances crafted to resonate effectively at key moments, and superb structural integrity were appreciated by scholars and connoisseurs alike even during his lifetime. Although the works included here are all suites, they are far from formulaic; each possesses a distinct character that conveys Louis’s greatness. Recorded through a partnership between the Philharmonie de Paris’s Music Museum and Harmonia Mundi, this album features performances on a precious, historic instrument preserved by the museum: an original 1652 Johannes Ksch instrument.
