In August 2018, Aretha Franklin—known by the nicknames “Queen of Soul” and “Lady Soul”—passed away. Born in Memphis in 1942, she was one of America’s most iconic singers, sharing popularity with Otis Redding as a Southern soul singer. In 1960, she was discovered by pianist Ray Bryant, and her recording of “Today I’m Singing the Blues” became a hit. She subsequently made her full-fledged debut with Columbia Records; this album features a selection of tracks centered on recordings made with Ray Bryant backing her. It allows listeners to fully appreciate Aretha’s vocals from the early days of her career.
