As I said, Lhoto's Ravel is amazing. Ma mer Roi" and "Couperin's Tomb" like listening to a completely new work, Lhoto at his best! ! Exactly one year after one of the best CDs of 2017, "Daphnis et Chloe", Lotto presents us the next Ravel. This is a release that fans of Ravel will not be able to wait for, as it is of course based on the instruments and techniques used at the time of the premiere. Lhoto and Les Siecle have made a name for themselves with Stravinsky and other works, but it is Ravel who really shows their chemistry, and if all the works are performed by them, it will be a major undertaking that will surely set a new standard for Ravel's orchestral works. Of the three pieces selected for this concert, "Ma mère roi" was written for piano solo, "Couperin's Tomb" is a popular solo piano piece, and the overture to the early "Scherzade" also has a version for piano solo, both of which Ravel later re-created in orchestration with great skill. But rather than a work in progress, Ravel doubled the size of "Ma mère roi" by adding a new prelude, "Dance of the Spinning Wheel," and five new interludes. Conversely, in "Couperin's Tomb," the piano-like structure of the fugue and toccata were removed, leaving four pieces. Both compositions are small for Ravel, but the elaborate use of his orchestral genius creates a superbly colored acoustic world.Listening to it on the instruments of the time when it was first performed, one is captivated by a beauty that is cleaner and fresher than today's.
