Description:

The FBO's superb performance of Handel's Double Concerto, a gorgeous medley of popular choral works! The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra presents Handel's Double Concerto! The Freiburg Baroque Orchestra will perform Handel's Double Concerto, a sumptuous orchestral work that includes arrangements of popular choral works by Handel himself. When composers of the day wrote concertos, they usually included a sprinkling of virtuoso elements to please their audiences, or they wrote pieces that could be performed by the general public. Handel, however, wrote concertos to entertain his audiences between concerts of his own works. Indeed, during the last three decades of his life, Handel's series of substantial concertos can be associated with concerts of ode and oratorio.Handel's first organ concerto was originally written as a benefit for the audience of a concert of his choral works in 1735-36, and his 12 ensemble concertos, op. 6, helped promote ticket sales for the winter oratorio concerts of 1739-40. The three works included here were written to be performed during the oratorio's premiere concert in 1747-48, after the end of the Jacobite rebellion in 1745, when many military bands were disbanded and oboe, horn, and bassoon players were inundating the city. HWV 332 was performed at the premiere of the oratorio "Joshua" on March 9, 1748.The first movement foreshadows the overture to "Alexander Barth," which was scheduled to be performed next, followed by the second movement of the oratorio "Messiah," 'And the glory of the Lord' with the wind instruments in charge of the vocal parts. HWV 333 was performed at the premiere of the oratorio "Alexander Barth" on March 23, 1748. HWV 334 was performed between the acts of Judas Maccabeus in April 1747. It is also very enjoyable, with some quotations from other works and a movement that sometimes sounds like music on the water. In this recording, the orchestra is divided into two groups: in HWV 334 and 332, the group led by Goltz plays the first orchestra, and in 333, the group led by Mülljans plays the first orchestra. The players of the Freiburg Baroque Orchestra are splendidly assembled for a superb performance. King International
