British tenor Mark Padmore, who has often performed with the Berlin Philharmonic and wowed the world with his operas, songs, and religious works, has re-recorded "Winterreise"! Padmore's "Winterreise" includes a 2008 recording with Paul Lewis (KKC 5398/HMU 907484). Performed in the original tune written by Schubert, with sotto voce and perfect diction, it was acclaimed around the world. Almost 10 years after this recording with Paul Lewis, Padmore, whose artistic range has been further broadened by performing "Winter Journey" with Imogen Cooper (2008), Till Fellner (2011/2017), and Paul Lewis (2014/2017) during their tours in Japan, has chosen to re-record the work with a partner who is a fortepiano genius. Padmore's partner for this re-recording is the fortepiano prodigy Bezeidenhout.The tonality is in Schubert's original key, but with a different partner, the fortepiano, it will be interesting to see how Padmore's performance develops. First of all, from the prelude of "Good Night," we are drawn in by the beautiful weak tones of the Bezeidenhout. Padmore's fortepiano, which perfectly matched the minute changes in facial expression, was superb. The eerily echoing, fading tone of the empty fifth degree in the finale is breathtaking. Padmore's penetrating narratorial style is also more and more magnificent, and the famous "Bodhi Tree" in the fifth piece is not only gentle, but also magnificent in "Dream of Spring" where Bezuindenhout's fortepiano is also very effective.
