The latest release from the prestigious Berlin Academy of Ancient Music, founded in 1982, is a collection of Telemann's concertos written for a variety of instruments. This is a program of concertos written by Telemann for a number of instruments, and you can enjoy the unquestionably superb and joyful music performed by each player. The chalcedon, which appears in TWV 53: h1, is a member of the lute family. Telemann has specified the chalcedon in some 400 compositions, usually for the bass voice, but sometimes also for harmonies. There are various types of chalcedons, but based on the range and other characteristics of Telemann's music, it is likely that he had in mind the six-string, long-necked instrument known as a "garizona. In this recording, the bass voices of the sonata are played on a copy of an instrument made in Prague in 1718 (or 1728).The tone is a little lower and thicker than that of a regular lute, and has a somewhat rustic flavor, which is noteworthy. The concerto featuring mandolin and hammered dulcimer also has a delightful oriental sound. The Berlin Academy of Ancient Music's Telemann is a delightful masterpiece. King International
